5 Lifestyle Impacts That Can Cause Uneven Skin Tone

Did you know, some of your lifestyle choices can show up on your skin? No, we’re not talking about the questionable dance moves you posted on TikTok last week. It’s more like everyday factors that range from sleep patterns and hormones to sun exposure and pollution.

These factors can contribute to uneven skin tone and texture. The hallmark of uneven skin tone is discoloration or irregular dark patches on the skin. You might also notice a change in your skin’s texture. Think roughness, blotchiness, and pimple-like bumps. Uneven texture is often the result of excess dead skin that builds up on the outer layer of the skin.

Common Causes of Uneven Skin Tone

Sun Exposure.

Warm sun feels great on the face. And we don’t want to deprive you of your small daily dose of vitamin D. The catch is UVA and UVB rays can cause sun damage like brown spots and uneven skin tone.

Hormones.

Melasma is a type of hyperpigmentation, and it’s a result of increased hormone production. It might look like brown or blueish-gray patches. It’s common, harmless, and known to usually fade after a few months.

Pollution.

The air is filled with tiny particles, dirt, and debris. And guess where they end up? On your face. This could lead to discoloration of the skin over time.

Getting older.

Every day, our skin gets a tiny bit older. Kind of comes with the territory. With natural ageing comes fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots.

Sleeping habits.

Long nights and restless sleeps can contribute to dark circles and puffiness under the eyes. Skin may look dull or drab.

What Can Help Prevent Uneven Skin Tone?

Wear sunscreen every day.

You can protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays and everyday environmental factors by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen before you step outside. We recommend an SPF of at least 30.

Exfoliate at least once a week.

A facial scrub or liquid exfoliator can help slough off dead skin that may lead to clogged pores and pimples. Exfoliating will also help your serums and moisturizers to penetrate the skin more deeply.

Add a brightening face serum to your routine.

This should be step two after you wash your face. Face serums are important as they work to improve skin’s tone, texture, and clarity.

Hydrate your skin — and yourself.

Water helps to promote healthy skin. Be sure to drink enough water throughout the day to give it the hydration it craves. Need a little boost? Moisturizers formulated with hyaluronic acid will do the trick

Get enough sleep.

Last, and certainly not least, it’s important to get 7-8 hours of sleep. You’ll keep those bags at bay and feel more alert during your day. Want a better night’s sleep? Stop scrolling on your phone about 30 minutes to an hour before bed. You might put on some calming music, try a deep breathing exercise, or do a quick meditation.
